I do use air units in my offensive doctrine. The reason I am obsessed about Newton's College and Shinkansen is because they allow the player to wage a kind of blitzkreig. carriers with turbines can quickly concentrate to deliver mortal blows in one section. Allowing ground units to safely land and grab other cities bombed by air units. Then air units can be used to set up a defensive wall. In the second turn, ground units will spread all over the country, going for cities, not units and crushing everything in their paths.
In order for this to happen, I need advanced flight. Getting this advance and plastics first is the long term goal of my Newton's College strategy. I want to somehow defeat armies that outnumber me by outfighting them.
Expansion is to be used simultaneously with research.
Engineers help greatly since they are twice as fast as settlers. In order to prevent myself from being overrun during my preparation, I'm thinking about building a strong navy. It worked for the British. Naval units are also the only type that can't be fanatics.
And what about communism? You guessed it. I plan to ignore it atleast until I get plastics and advanced flight.
: I see you have used the early surprise attack, but play on hard level and you'll probably learn the wisdom of defensive units. Surprise attacks are very effective against AI because they don't react effectively against specific attacks and often build few defences, but agains intelligent opponents I doubt you get far. (and yes, I also normally attack with 3 horsemen (I scout with defensive infantry first though; more scouting power for the same price)
: And have you ever tried mountain units, air units etc? Those will let you conquer opponents in no time; without the need to build railroad. I never build railroad, except to increase the production of industrialized cities, and don't think the Shinkansen especially powerful.
: I think Zeus, Lighthouse(smaller sea maps), Statue of Liberty and Hoover dam (large maps) more powerfull than Shinkansen and even Newton. (the latter since future society is the government too have when researching future tech, a high priority, at least in version 0 of the game)
