HyperSpeed Growth factors.

: I can only sustain a growth of 15 M per turn though, even with hundreds of engineers terra-forming everything. Tried for 20 M, but I'm over developing cities early - they end up with 25 surplus wheat. Guess I should crowd my cities closer together.

What an interesting comment!

The point here is in the how the initial grid of cities has been spreaded in order to enhance early growth. After that (if research is steadily happening, and no immediate threat from nearby AIs would compromise going for the ship parts), it's only a matter of letting maximums stack above each other and enjoy the advantages of Future techs IF&WHEN a war must be started, before even launching. Just for kicks. ;)

I guess that's exactly the challenge (if there's nothing else to perform) most players should be going for; over-growing everything without being bothered with the weakest of AIs.
But, wait... one day, we WILL have to cope with more powerful opponents if the magic coder(s) out there do make better (at anything, btw) AI-algorithms.
