my strategy is to take over as many nations early (2-3 are sometimes possible) then asap monarchy then by the time I switch to democracy I am almost finished with my tech-tree and have some heavy units for takeovers (1950 onwards)
therefore I develop as few different units as possible
Shinkansen Express is an absolute must in my plans all other wonders are secondary (except naturally Eiffel Tower to keep SE active)I would never need ships except for ilands and for fun
my preference are 230% worlds with 40-60% landmass to build an empire
if I am attacked all the time there is fur sure only fundamentalism - needed to be able to produce enough units as defence (but then I am almost sure I made a mistake in the early game)
had also a game using fundamentalism instead of democracy but then the game ended very fast without real challenge
my critic on the AIs: most of them never come out of fundamentalism or are so far behind when I am able to attack them when with even starting strength (II against II)
(like 204/204 against 120/180)
again its their Do or Die approach which makes them almost impossible to beat but when you survive there is no challenge left because it becomes a run over
